Concrete Surface Preparation for Resin Flooring

Why preparation decides whether a resin floor lasts — diamond grinding, shot blasting, planing, scabbling and how the right method is chosen for each substrate.

Most resin floor failures are not material failures. They are bond failures, and bond failures nearly always trace back to preparation. No resin system, however expensive, will outperform the surface it was applied to.

What preparation has to achieve

  • Remove laitance, the weak cement-rich layer left on power-floated slabs
  • Remove existing coatings, sealers, curing compounds and adhesive residues
  • Open the surface texture so resin can key mechanically into the concrete
  • Expose sound concrete and reveal defects that need repair
  • Remove contamination, particularly oil, grease and silicone

Skipping any of these to save a day usually costs a floor.

Diamond grinding

The default method for most commercial and industrial floors. Rotating diamond segments cut the surface, remove laitance and thin coatings, and leave a consistent, lightly open profile. Run on vacuum extraction it is close to dust-free, which is why it is the only sensible option in occupied buildings, food production and multi-tenanted premises.

Best for: power-floated slabs, thin coating removal, smooth substrates, occupied sites.

Shot blasting

Steel shot is thrown at the floor at high velocity and recovered with the debris, leaving a coarse, uniformly roughened profile. It covers large areas quickly and creates an excellent key for thicker build-ups.

Best for: large warehouse and industrial areas, thick-section systems, heavily contaminated or laitance-bound slabs.

Floor planing and scabbling

Both remove material in depth rather than just profiling the surface. Planing takes off thick coatings, screeds and heavy build-ups; scabbling breaks back weak, damaged or badly out-of-tolerance concrete.

Best for: thick existing floors, latex and bitumen removal, levelling high spots, badly deteriorated slabs.

Repairs come after preparation, not before

Once the floor is prepared, defects are visible: cracks, spalled joint arrises, blowholes, weak patches, delaminated repairs. These are cut out and reinstated in resin or cementitious repair mortars appropriate to the system. Coating over a defect leaves a line of weakness that will telegraph through within months.

Moisture and DPM

Preparation is also when moisture is tested. If the slab has no effective damp-proof membrane, or readings are above the system''s tolerance, an epoxy DPM build-up is installed before the wearing course. This is not optional — resin over a damp slab blisters and delaminates.

What good preparation looks like on site

Contained dust extraction, edges and details ground back properly, a uniform profile across the whole area, defects repaired and cured, the floor vacuumed clean, and nothing applied until the substrate is signed off.
